How to Pressure Wash a Deck
There are three important aspects to pressure washing or power washing any surface.
- Pressure. A typical pressure washer will range from 1000 p.s.i. up to 4000 p.s.i. The amount of pressure is important, but too much pressure will damage the surface that you are pressure washing. In many cases, you might leave a permanent scratch on the cement if you are not careful.
- Hot or Cold water temperature. The typical pressure washer from Home Depot will connect to your standard hose bib and the water temperature will coincide with the water temperature coming out of the faucet. This is called cold-water pressure washing. Industrial/commercial pressure washing units are set up to run the water over hot coils that will instantly heat the water up. The temperature of the water can be controlled from lukewarm to boiling hot.
- Proper cleaning detergent/chemical. In most cases, a mild degreaser will help loosen up the dirt and provide a consistent clean throughout the job. Typically, the detergent is applied with a pump-up sprayer evenly onto the surface.
Hot water and proper detergent selection will take your job results to the next level. A person would not wash a greasy pan in cold water and the same applies to maximizing the cleaning result on the surface that you are cleaning. When pressure washing your deck, hot water will provide better results.
Would you do a load of laundry without putting detergent into the washer? The answer is NO. The same applies to pressure washing a deck or cleaning the sidewalk in front of a strip mall. Applying a mild degreaser prior to pressure washing will maximize the cleaning results.

Understanding Pressure Levels for Deck Washing
Choosing the right pressure level is crucial when pressure washing a deck. Too much pressure can damage the wood, leading to splintering or permanent scratches. It's essential to start with a lower pressure setting and gradually increase it to find the optimal level that effectively cleans without causing harm.
For most wooden decks, a pressure level between 1200 to 1500 PSI is recommended. This range is effective for removing dirt and grime while being gentle enough to protect the wood. Always test a small, inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire deck to ensure the pressure is suitable.
The Importance of Water Temperature in Cleaning
Water temperature plays a significant role in the effectiveness of pressure washing. Hot water can dissolve grease and grime more efficiently than cold water, making it easier to achieve a deep clean. This is particularly important for decks that have accumulated oils or stubborn stains over time.
Using hot water at temperatures around 150°F can enhance the cleaning process, especially when combined with appropriate detergents. Miracle Maintenance utilizes hot water systems to ensure optimal cleaning results, providing a thorough wash that revitalizes your deck's appearance.
Choosing the Right Detergents for Your Deck
Using the correct detergent is essential for effective pressure washing. Detergents not only help to break down tough stains but also protect the surface of the deck from damage. It's important to select a cleaner that is specifically formulated for the type of material your deck is made from to avoid any adverse reactions.
For wooden decks, a biodegradable and eco-friendly detergent is often recommended. These products are designed to lift dirt without damaging the wood fibers. Miracle Maintenance offers a selection of high-quality detergents that ensure a clean finish while being safe for the environment.
Post-Washing Care and Maintenance for Decks
After pressure washing, proper care is essential to maintain the deck's integrity and appearance. This includes allowing the deck to dry completely before applying any sealants or stains, which can help protect the wood from moisture and UV damage.
Regular maintenance, such as re-sealing the deck every few years, can prolong its lifespan and keep it looking new. Miracle Maintenance advises homeowners to establish a cleaning and maintenance schedule to prevent the buildup of dirt and grime, ensuring a beautiful and durable outdoor space.
